Key fob dead or not working
A key fob that won't lock, unlock or start the car is most often a dead fob battery. Nearly every fob hides a mechanical key and most push-start cars have a backup way to start with a dead fob — so you can usually get in and go.
Try these fob workarounds
A dead fob rarely means you're stuck. The hidden key blade unlocks the door, and most push-start cars start when you hold the fob against a specific spot.
- 1Slide out the hidden mechanical key (there's a release catch on the fob) to unlock the door.
- 2For push-button start, hold the fob directly against the start button — or the marked spot on the column/cupholder — then press to start.
- 3Try replacing the fob's coin battery (usually a CR2032) — it's a two-minute fix.
- 4If only some buttons work, or range is short, it's likely the fob battery or the fob itself.
- 5Get a replacement fob battery, or a new fob programmed at a dealer/locksmith.
Locked out — get a lockout pro
If you can't get in and the mechanical key isn't handy, a lockout pro will open the car so you can grab your key or swap the fob battery.
- 1Check the fob for a hidden mechanical key blade and try the driver's door lock.
- 2Double-check every door and the trunk in case one is unlocked.
- 3Wait somewhere safe and well-lit until the driver arrives.
