Key fob won't unlock or start the car

A dead fob battery rarely means you are stranded: almost every fob hides a metal key blade, and most cars will still start when the fob is held against the button.

Use the hidden key blade

Almost every fob hides a physical key inside, and your door has a hidden keyhole.

  1. 1Slide the release catch on the fob and pull out the metal blade.
  2. 2If the door handle looks keyhole-less, pop the small cap on or under the handle.
  3. 3Unlock with the blade.
  4. 4Once inside, the fob usually still starts the car (see the dead-fob tip).
  5. 5Replace the fob battery (CR2032, sold everywhere) today.

Start it with a dead fob

A dead fob battery can still start the car — the car reads the chip at close range.

  1. 1Hold the fob directly against the start button (or the marked spot on the steering column — check the manual).
  2. 2Press the brake and start button as normal.
  3. 3Some cars have a fob slot in the console instead — use that.
  4. 4Replace the fob battery today.
